French Community in PNG
The French community has been historically quite small because of the the absence of former colonial links and little economic interests. It was mostly comprised of catholic missionaries who first arrived in the late 1880’s and anthropologists coming now and then, who were often based in rural areas, far from the national capital, Port Moresby.
However, the community has been growing steadily in recent years, with the construction of the PNG LNG project and the fast economic development of Papua New Guinea. It is more and more comprised of businessmen and women. Between 2008 and 2013, the French community more than doubled with 134 French citizens now registered in our consulate as PNG residents (december 2013)
