Meeting between Laurent Fabius and Prime Minister Peter O’Neill

Laurent Fabius, French minister of foreign affairs and international development, welcoming Prime Minister Peter O’Neill of Papua New Guinea.

During their meeting, Mr Fabius and Mr. O’Neill worked together on the next conference “Paris Climat 2015” (COP21), in November 2015. Many islands are threaten by global warming, especially islands of Papua New Guinea. 80 people have been evacuated of the Carteret Atoll recently, with the help of the International Office for Migration.
Mr. Fabius and Mr. O’Neill also evoked the bilateral relation between France and Papua New Guinea and decided to strengthen our cooperation in Oceania.

Mr. Fabius later declared in press conference: “An important summit will take place in Papua New Guinea in September (Pacific Islands Forum) and Prime Minister O’Neill will come back in France during the COP21 in November. His country is directly impacted par the global warming issue, for example in the forest sector through the REDD program (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).
